(3D Mapping and UAV Focus) - PhD Candidate

Cetim Matcor is looking for a highly motivated engineer to join our team. The successful candidate will be expected to work towards the obtention of a PhD degree with the support of the technical expert team and the academic team. The engineer will integrate the Research and Development team as an Engineer PhD Candidate.

She/he will be exposed to a wide spectrum of industries (oil and gas, marine, utilities, aerospace), will participate to our R&D activities and will develop industrial activities which will align and contribute to the obtention of a PhD degree subject to the examination requirements set by the University.

Key Responsibilities:

The proposed project provides opportunities for interdisciplinary research to extend the knowledge of digital twins of physical objects and parameters, using sensor data and simulations to enable digital testing, monitoring, analytics, and prediction for inspection with applications in facade inspection and corrosion detection.

The candidate will be expected to perform tasks such as:

  • Research and development of new sensing capabilities for inspection with applications in facade inspection, corrosion detection, inspection of ship hulls and aircraft components.
  • Development of AI methods to fuse multi-modal data for automated inspection to mitigate constraints of existing methods related to lighting, thermal and material properties.
  • Development and implementation of UAV design approach tailored towards inspection processes.
  • Integration of new sensing modalities in UAV infrastructure for precision localisation and 3D mapping.
  • Propose sensor fusion of precise localisation methods with 3D reconstruction algorithms to achieve centimetre 3D modelling accuracy.
  • Develop scene understanding with machine learning to enable automated segmentation of 3D point clouds and facilitate comparison with BIMs.


  • Bachelor/Master in Mechanical Engineering or related disciplines such as Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics
  • Familiar with programming languages (e.g. Fortran, Python, C/C++)
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with ability to manage multiple tasks and timelines
  • Excellent oral and communication skills
  • Self-motivated, confident and able to work independently as well as in a team
  • Genuine interest for research
  • Prepared to work at site and in the laboratory
