Analysis of failures in welded assemblies

Identifying the causes of welded assembly defects and failures, leveraging experience and feedback, and defining corrective and curative actions (in repair, design or manufacturing).

Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to do the following:

  • Identify various weld defects
  • Identify various types of welded assembly damage
  • Identify various repair and/or redesign options to improve welded assemblies

Date:

22nd – 25th March 2022 (Tue – Fri)

Time:

15h15 – 19h00 (GMT+8) Singapore / 08h15 – 12h00 (GMT+2) Paris

Pre-requisites

General knowledge of welding and metallurgy is required.

Pedagogical Means

Technical presentation alternating theory, case studies, numerous concrete examples and visit of Cetim’s failure analysis tools, enriched by discussion and questions from the trainees.

Who should attend:

This course is designed for personnel from the design, methods, production, maintenance and quality departments as well as any other employees who deal with welded assembly defects.

Course outline:

  • The necessary vocabulary and terminology for detailed description of welded assemblies.
  • Failure analysis methods.
  • Using illustrations of weld damage (welding defects, mechanical failures, corrosion):
    Identification of the causes:

    – Welding defects: cold cracks, hot cracks, lamellar tearing;

    – In-service failure: mechanical action, fatigue, creep;

    – Corrosion: pitting, stress, cavitation.

    Defining immediate corrective actions and curative actions.

  • Real-world case studies of welded assembly failure: trainees examine welded parts with defects to determine the causes and recommend appropriate corrective or curative measures.
  • Capitalization on results.
  • Visit of Cetim’s failure analysis tools and equipment: mechanical testing, optical metallurgy, electron microscopy.
