Hydrogen

Identified as one of the key technologies within the framework of the environmental strategies of many countries, hydrogen is considered a major energy vector for the decarbonization of industry and mobility. Due to its specific characteristics (fugacity, permeability and explosiveness), hydrogen leads players in the mechanical industry to develop their equipment to adapt it to these new uses or to anticipate significant distribution. To support mechanical industries in the deployment of the H2 sector, Cetim is adopting a Strategic Project “HyMEET” (Hydrogen Material and Equipment Engineering and Testing) to guarantee the technological mastery required by the new development of hydrogen market. A dedicated roadmap has been set up to fit with industrial and technological needs in the fields of:

  • Material selection and compatibility: Metallic materials, polymers & composites to evaluate their compatibility through mechanical characterization (static loading, fatigue behaviour, crack propagation, tribological behaviour) and physicochemical properties (permeation, diffusion, concentration)
  • Design & failure analysis, with a dedicated understanding of pressure equipment design
  • Manufacturing processes: assembly processes and their characteristics, new composite manufacturing processes for tanks and pipes as well as specific manufacturing for new uses (including stack manufacturing, additive manufacturing) and industrial technical cleanliness
  • Control & qualification: developing dedicated benches for components/systems testing and qualification in operating conditions and non-destructive solutions as well as structural health monitoring devices within a risk assessment approach dedicated to H2 applications
  • H2 associated development: Ammonia, Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage and new needs for mechanical industry (sealing, material compatibility, durability and safety)
  • Standardisation, Normative and Regulatory developments
  • Life Cycle Assessment
